It has recently come to our attention that the majority of people’s perception of age and what is ‘normal’ is shockingly poor. Achy joints, poor balance, taking the chair lift, using a zimmer– all just part of getting old right? Wrong. Improving your performance, no matter what your age

One of chiropractors’ biggest pet hates, and something we hear a lot, is “It’s just age isn’t it, nothing you can do about it” or “No, I can’t do that, haven’t been able to for years, I’m too old”. Too many people use this as an excuse not to try. In fact, there is a lot you can do about it and in most cases you are much more capable than you realise. Chiropractic care is not just about relieving pain. It’s about improving your performance no matter what your age. Whether it’s improving flexibility, reducing the effects of arthritis, improving balance and posture or allowing you to walk further than you could before.

Our population is ageing, a fact we cannot deny. According to the Office For National Statistics, over the last 10 years the number of people aged 100 and above has increased by a massive 72%. Not only is the population ageing, but the need for support for the elderly also continues to grow. In 2011, it was found that over a quarter of a million people aged 65 and over were living in care homes – and that number is still growing. It’s predicted that if the population continues to age there will be a higher number of unhealthy and vulnerable people, and therefore more people who will need intensive care.

Active ageing

I don’t know about you, but at Willow Chiropractic we definitely don’t like this prediction. We all fear getting old – and with messages like this it’s no wonder! We all like to think that we’ll retain our independence for as long as possible; I’m sure many of you will agree that we’d also like to live in our own home rather than living in a care home because we need help getting in and out of bed every day. The way we see it, we all have a choice. Either we can sit around and wait for age to slow us down (because that’s ‘normal’), or we can decide to go against the grain and promise ourselves that we will do everything in our power to stay as healthy, happy, mobile and independent as we can for as long as possible. And that is what Chiropractic is all about.

Living life to the full!

Many Willow Chiropractic patients have cracked the secret to active ageing. One of our current patients is 83 years old and to this day he still goes to work every Monday. For his 80th birthday he did a skydive, and in January next year he will be completing a wing walk on an aeroplane in the sky. Another of our patients is now 97 years old and still gets all the DIY done around the house, even if it does involve going up and down ladders! Do you think these guys have given up? Do you think they put up with achy joints and arthritis as just being part of their age? No. They will never accept age as an excuse for slowing down. They are defying expectations of what is ‘normal’ and living their lives to the full. Chiropractic care keeps them mobile and able to do these amazing things.

Join the revolution!

So to everyone reading this, whatever your age, I challenge you to join us in revolutionising this idea of an ageing population who live in care homes. Become part of the ‘active ageing’ population instead. Challenge yourself to perform at your highest level. Be proactive. Get moving. For those who are already feeling the effects of age, don’t put up with it. There is a solution – so get checked by a Chiropractor now and find out how you too can achieve your true potential.

To your better health.
